Harvard cancer researcher, Kevin Struhl, and his colleagues have discovered that several of the most fatal diseases known to man share particular genes. Struhl compared genetic data from two different types of cells, mammary and connective tissue cells, first comparing healthy cells to cancerous cells in order to determine which genes were mutated and cancerous.
At that point they compared the diseased genes in the mammary and connective tissue cells to discover that they had 343 in common. Investigation into the functions of the common diseased genes determined that the diseased cells shared altered inflammation and metabolism instruction families.
Metabolism is the basic process of physical and chemical function, and energy availability. Inflammation and altered metabolic processes are implicated in all of the ten leading causes of death in the US. While the link between inflammation and cancer is well known and significantly documented medical knowledge, connections between metabolic diseases and cancer are “stunning,” according to Struhl.
After scanning existing medical literature, the researchers discovered that many of the 343 genes they implicated in cancer had already been associated with heart disease, obesity, diabetes, and others of the most frequently fatal killers, especially those that deposit fat plaques on the walls of arteries.
In order to validate their surprising findings, the researchers broke down the metabolic genes before they were diseased, and discovered that the majority were fundamental to cancer development in both the mammary and connective tissue cells. In additional work, they demonstrated other important genetic similarities between cancer and metabolic disease.
One researcher who studies genes just before and after they develop cancerous and diabetic changes appreciated how the new findings illustrate the involvement of some of the proteins in several different diseases. "The idea is that there's essentially a diseased cell state, but the specific [type] and disease you get depends on what cell type it is," said Struhl.
The importance of these discoveries lies partly in the possibility that some cancer treatments might also be effective treatments for metabolic diseases, and vice versa. Already cross tests of drugs for arthritis, diabetes, and plaque building diseases with cancer cells has yielded successful results. Eleven out of thirteen drugs inhibited cancer development in the cell lines.
The other, seemingly more important implication is that taking steps to prevent one disease inarguably inhibits a host of others.

After the recent health care bill was signed, Mr. Obama said, "We are done." He was right. Now it is the Church's turn to take up Her ordained task of healing God's sons and daughters. Thank you for posting this, PtS... healing has been on my mind all day. Time for Our Lord to reveal His healing power. All praise to the Divine Physician, Jesus.
speaking of cells and genes and proteins and such... have you seen the beautiful sermon preached on "laminins?" Amazing... brings tears to my eyes. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_e4zgJXPpI4&NR=1
Wow - what a way to kick of a Friday! Thanks for the bread, Len.
Halleluiah, Halleluiah, Halleluiah!
Man, our protestant brethren really know how to stoke the fires!!! Blazin'!
Hey Dave, I have lots of Protestant buddies... for some reason many of them Lutheran. Pray for them, for me, could ya? They like to take shots, and sometimes it hurts. But I must admit I can give it back--like when Tiller (who was an usher at his Lutheran church) was in the news. I asked one buddy if all Lutheran ushers have to be abortionists before they could sign up to greet at the door. I realized I touched a nerve, so I backed off. Then I said a prayer for all the poor, truly Faithful worshippers who ever shook that man's hand, and asked God that somehow their touching him would count as forgiveness for what he had done in his life. Then my A.D.D. mind kept going... backwards of course... and asked God to forgive Martin Luther's "abortion of the Faith" which has caused such a loss of friendship over these years between men of Faith. But... behold, He makes all things new! And with Benedict, and his voice truly speaking "well said" words of healing and wisdom, we have a true healer at the helm. All Divine help, I pray, come down on that man our Rock. May my Lutheran buddies come to know him and accept him as our Captain while he steers the Ship. What a leader we have who keeps the flame lit. Peter... Benedict... we love you! Show us how to fish!!! Peace on ya, Bro. And you too, P.O.T.A.! (lol) p.s. if ya'll could include my wife in your prayers... we found out she's tired lots because of anemia. All prayers would be gratefully welcomed. Thanks!!
"Peter... Benedict... we love you! Show us how to fish!!!" AMEN!
Prayers said for your bride. Cook her up a nice dinner of liver and broccoli! Sure - maybe it's not gourmet, but it's the thought that counts, right?
Peace back to you and, of course, to our POTA!
Hey, to change the subject BACK to laminins... wanna hear a real miracle (one I didn't have time to explain before)? The evening that a Protestant friend sent me an email with a link to the Youtube video of the sermon on laminins, that very morning my wife and I and the kids were on our way to Ann Arbor, MI to watch my nephew pitch in a college game for Aquinas College against Concordia College. I've been trying to get my wife to read the Bible more, but have been stymied for some reason... til I figured out (duh??? after 13 years!!!) that she is NOT LIKE ME! Imagine that! She is more left-brain, I've concluded... while I am more right-brained. Well, in that light, I thought "maybe finding the beautiful numbers and equations in Scripture will help her." So, I set out on a quest to show her the beauty of the Three's and the Four's, and the Three-Plus-Fours-Which-Equals-the-Beautiful-Sevens... and the 3-times-4-and the beautiful 12's.... All throughout the Holy Writ, there are the beautiful, hormonious, God-numbers that keep showing up. Well, she... AND the kids... started to "get it"... and to really dig it. We had my old high school New Jerusalem Bible with us in the van, so we started looking up places where the numbers appear in His Word (too many to recount here). After much discussion, we all concluded that Three is Divine... and along with that, that Two is Human (that part came after lots of talk about the two lungs, eyes, nostrils,... you name it! And yes, with three boys in the van, it did get a little "lockerroomish", to put it kindly. So, after a long day of driving, watching baseball (and finding the beauty of the numbers in THAT game, by the way), talking, praying, and reading Scripture... we arrived home. And THEN! Then I open the email that had the link, and what do I find?!?!? The link to the laminins that a Protestant brethren had sent. I freaked. I showed my wife! I tried to be calm... but also ecstatic at the same time. I said, "Hey honey, come look at this laminin video and the images that accompany it." She obliged. I said, "Will ya look at that image!" She did. I said, "Along with the video link, my friend also send this image." She said, "Okay." I said, "Honey, darling, oh left-brained wife of mine... weren't we just talking about this today for about an hour and a half?" Then I showed her. "Look... even the kids said it... even the kids got it..." She smiled. "Look, dear... the Divine is Three... and the human is Two." She smiled some more. "And look honey, you're the science person... what are those things?... chains?... see, one chain on the left, and one chain on the right... and look, aren't they kind of intertwined and wrapped around and sort of connected and held together by the chain thingie that comes down with the three whatever-those-things-are at the top?" Yep, she said. "And doesn't it say in the Bible, 'Wherever two or more are gathered in My Name, there I am?'" She said, yep. Then it hit me... whenever we get microscopes strong enough to look at those chain thingies and see what holds even the two's and three's together... we're gonna see God.... Again... Just expoundin' on the laminins to a couple of Abnormals. Now, off to listen to Matt Maher and "Hold us Together". God's Binding Love to all who read this... Lenny... (p.s. please keep prayin for my wife... she's oh-so-close to finding the cure... thanks... btw her name is Julie... thanks)

Oops... here's the link to the textbook diagram of the laminin... sorry, shoulda posted this first...
LOL! Too funny, Len – wish I could have been the proverbial fly-on-the-wall for that car ride!
Coincidentally, I too have a number for you: 12
First you’ll have to bear with a sheepish confession: I just finished reading through the Pentateuch. I’m 44 years old and prior to this, I had merely dipped my toes into sections of Genesis and Exodus but have never read all five of them in succession, and it was AWESOME! Is it just me, or are we Catholics as a whole generally innocents when it comes to the Old Testament…I dunno…probably just me.
Anyhow – I was struck at the end of Deuteronomy by Moses’ not being able to cross the Jordan. I found it so poignant and so powerfully meaningful. There he is, having led the 12 tribes for 40 years through their literal and figurative wildernesses, trying to teach them how to behave, putting up with the whining and griping (our POTA eloquently described this journey), and right on the eve when the promise is fulfilled…so close he could smell the milk and honey…well, you know the rest.
You’re fluent in A.D.D. so you might follow the randomness here – thinking about Moses standing on the shore, being denied the reward that his 12 “children” were about to enjoy, led me to thinking about our Lord. By His crucifixion, our Lord successfully made that crossing…crossing/cross…hmm, ok, dropping that tangent…BUT, in contrast to Moses, He did cross; yet, this time, the 12 “children” were left behind. There’s a fascinating mirroring-thing going on there:
Moses/40 years/desert wandering/labor+obedience/denied crossing/12 kids get reward :: Jesus/40 days/desert struggling/labor+obedience/crossed/12 kids put to His work
Here’s the craziness of it all: the 12 tribes may have thought that they got the reward, but their reward was, in fact, work and struggle. Now…more mirroring here…in contrast, the 12 apostles (counting Barnabas), in getting the work actually get the reward, for the reward is His work, and in His work is rest…oh, man…I could think about this all day! However, speaking of work…
Thanks again for the laminin reference and the image. He’s everywhere – I love the infinite affirming discoveries!
BTW - congrats on the 13-year-epiphany regarding Julie – took me about that long too. Our poor spouses, to be married to an abnormal…for this, I sure hope they get a few “hall passes” to hand to St. Peter.
Len: Whoaa buddy! I am an "abnormal"?? Well, ok, I guess I am. Ahem.
Alright, I have NEVER been ADD (not that there's anything WRONG with that!) but I follow the two of you completely, (LOL) so what does that say about ME???
Dave, I am working on a new union post that includes this idea. You guys are on the money.
...and thus exposing one of the inherent weaknesses of this medium: as I was typing ADD, I had glanced back over to Len ;)
In truth, I have yet to see any ADD tendencies in you, Sonja, but your fluency is commendable :)
Looking forward to the new union post.
